I mean things don't move forward if we don't have people who are willing to, you know, you know, push things a little bit and he, he was that guy, you know, and he, he was very fascinating. So over the next few days he tells me that theres something hes never told me before, and that he is actually Pope Franciss private personal doctor. One name kept coming up over and over again, Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. I want, I just want to get the job done. [00:22:38] Bob: What Benita doesn't know at the time, she couldn't have known, is that Hannah's death also sparks the interest of the European journalist named Bo Lindquist, a Swedish filmmaker, he's already working on a documentary film about Paolo, but it isn't designed with a happy ending in mind. Macchiarini ran into some legal trouble regarding his stem cell treatments with Swedish prosecutors recently appealing a sentence given to the Italian surgeon, the Associated Press reported. Um, maybe I felt like that at some point when I was really young and I had a, had a crush in school, I don't know, but I don't, I don't ever remember feeling like that. You know, it was awful for her family. This was holy cow. Alexander was working on a documentary about Macchiarinis success in the medical field. My then ex-husband, who I had moved to New York with and the father of our beautiful daughter, was dying of brain cancer. Benita was pursuing a big story when the ill-fated lovers met in 2013. Um, and so he had, we were coming back into the room after dinner one night, and I was kind of teasing him. Alexander then married, Edson Jeune, a ballroom dancer. By the time he performed the artificial trachea transplant on Cetir, he had already performed the same procedure on four other patients. [00:30:47] Benita: It was all very hush-hush, you know, everybody that was involved in the wedding planning, including the people that designed the wedding invitations, the people that made my wedding dresses, everybody had to just, had to sign nondisclosure agreements. When she continued to press Macchiarini about the pope, she said he blamed Vatican politics, alleging that the more conservative former Pope Benedict went behind Pope Francis' back to stop him from officiating the wedding. And I literally, I was really like, what? It has led to extensive reform work internally at KI in order to improve and clarify a number of regulations and routines.". [00:20:06] Benita: We had kind of quietly gotten engaged, but we weren't telling anybody um, because I mean the complicated thing about this is that there's a sort of unwritten rule in journalism that everybody understands, that, you know, there's, there is a line you just don't cross a kind of sacred line where you don't, you can empathize with a story subject, you can sympathize, but you don't become personally involved with a story subject for, for the reason, obviously, that your objectivity could be compromised, right. And Benita had a veil, and I brought over some dresses, and we were having some champagne, giggling and sketching, and it was so fun. In February, 2021 it was featured as a two-hour special on ABCs 20/20. And I was raised Episcopalian, but I said, "I know, I know enough about the Catholic religion to know that no priest is going to marry two divorcees," and he, he, you know, he said, "Don't worry. [00:38:44] Benita: I should say this wedding turns into something akin to the wedding of the century. I loved my work at NBC. Benita Alexander has been working as a Macchiarini at NBC News. And it was so fun to work with, with all of them, you know, anybody that, and they have private appointments that wanted to come in. In 2019, she produced the Oxygen doc Seduced By Evil, which chronicles another con-man, Derek Alldred. If I had a checklist, he, he was everything I would want in a partner, everything you would want in a man. [00:31:09] Matthew Christopher: Um, a couture wedding gown designer is someone that actually design gowns from beginning to end, whether that's draping, whether that's sketching; couture means it's handmade. Although her family said the injury wasn't serious enough to necessitate a tracheal transplant, she still underwent the procedure and went on to experience tremendous pain. Previously, Benita Alexander had created a documentary called He Lied About Everything, where she opened up about Paulo Macchiarini and how she got love conned by him. And he said, "Just tell me when you want to stop." [00:35:25] Matthew Christopher: Um, gosh, 1-2-3 for her. He soon proposed, only for her to realize her fianc was a complete liar around a year later. As Alexander began to unravel the web of lies Macchiarini had told her, she began to wonder if the world-renowned thoracic surgeon had also misled people in his professional life. And we rode for probably 30, 45 minutes until I sort of found a spot that I thought was appropriate, and I got off the bike and I went to the water. The self-proclaimed love con expert is essentially currently utilizing her platform to expose various cases and empower brave women to not be shamed into silence, as per her Instagram. Mathias Corbascio, another cardiothoracic surgeon who worked at the Karolinska Institute at the time, said the intensive care unit doctor responsible for her care began consulting with him on the literature written by Macchiarini on tracheal replacements. From what we can tell, Benita still resides in New York alongside her daughter, where shes primarily a freelance executive producer for Lion Television, all the while serving as a public figure. Where is Benita Alexander now? She said that in November 2014, they had planned a trip to California to spend Thanksgiving with her family, "and he had been really stressed in the weeks before, and he had been talking to me for some time about how there were people that were against him, and his 'enemies.'". He, he was supposed to be their last hope. [00:42:58] Bob: If you have been targeted by a scam or fraud, you are not alone. So this is a lot of very heady information to take in, and he basically tells me that because hes the Popes private, personal doctor, um, and because this is such a progressive Pope, who has such a forward-thinking agenda, that the Pope a) wants to thank him for all the work hes done at the Vatican and for being his private doctor, and b) wants to use us for lack of a better term, as kind of a poster couple, so that by marrying two divorcees, you know, the Pope is going to use us to sort of open the doors of the Catholic church to allow divorcees to finally get married in a Catholic church. Alexander didn't initially believe him, but she said Macchiarini told her that the pope wanted to push forward his progressive agenda for the church. In 2013, the successful documentary producer met world-renowned, Dr. Paolo Macchiarini while working on a project for a major network. Benita met and married a fellow reporter, John Noel, and moved with him to New York, where they welcomed their daughter in 2003. I think he needs to be behind bars. [00:09:12] Bob: And so, Benita travels to Boston to meet the miracle worker for herself. Oh, and a dance gown too, that was crazy fun. And so we were looking into this field, and we found this doctor. One of the reasons I am so adamant about continuing to talk about this is because I think victim-shaming is terrible. And I was ready to ride off into the sunset, into this new life in Barcelona, and but it was also a very, very difficult decision for me. They make it for you in the lab, right. She found out exactly what hed lied about - and she said it was extensive. And she, unfortunately, was born with no windpipe. That's pretty unusual too. And so I thought, okay, maybe its not as crazy as it, as it sounds. And then um, (sigh) oh her sisters, the two bridesmaids, and then two flower girl dresses. It was going to be this four-day event in Rome, you know, with a red carpet event the night before the wedding, and a big brunch the day after the wedding, and people bought plane tickets, they bought fancy, you know, red carpet attire for this wedding. And each surprise was a bigger wow factor than the last one. Kind of like being in a fairy tale, you know. In 2015, Alexander sent emails to the Karolinska Institute expressing concerns about the acclaimed surgeon. I had to expose him.". But our guest list was insane because now that the Pope was marrying us, he kept inviting all these dignitaries, you know, so world leaders were coming to our wedding. Macchiarini had been credited with developing innovative surgical techniques using stem cells in synthetic trachea transplants. And it's a beautiful building, and it just has this feeling about it, you know, as you, it's a very special feeling too. [00:25:49] Bob: But, and this made him a fun interview, he doesn't mind debating his controversial techniques. He was speaking at a conference in Boston, and we went there to interview him, sort of ahead of Hannah coming to the US, about his work and about Hannah. And so we, we thought, you know, this is a perfect case to focus a story around, and so we started doing Hannah's story. I couldn't fall apart because if he's lying to me like this, there's no way he's not lying in his medical and professional life.". What to tell her. Who lost her dad. The Korean girl that had undergone Macchiarini's procedure in Illinois, whose story Alexander had been sent to cover, had died in the time following the surgery. And so now his son, who I think was about 8 or 9 at the time, was in Brazil with her family, and he was engaged in this very difficult and complicated fight to try and get his son back, and such a loving father. [00:12:46] Benita: Oh yeah, no, I immediately just sort of shoved it down and thought whatever that was, it was, it was silly, and uh, let's forget about that. And, and, and embraced me and held me so hard. Um, it hit all of us very, very hard. "She had suffered at least two strokes; she had lost much of her vision, so she was partially blind; she couldn't walk," Pinto said. And he was putting artificial tracheas, the windpipe, into patients.
